Taiwan nationals are for the time being not required to obtain a visa for shorter travels to Korea. If they intend to stay in South Korea for more than 90 days at a time to work, study or live in the country, they need to apply for a visa prior to their travel.
South Korea is set to introduce an online electronic travel authorization for eligible citizens as of 2021. With the launch of the eVisa or South Korean eTA, the immigration process to enter the country will be significantly simplified and shortened.
Travelers from Taiwan can follow the latest information on launching the eVisa and consult the eligible countries list from Korean eTA. Full details about South Korea visa requirements for Taiwan will be indicated on the website in due course.
Do I Need a Visa for South Korea from Taiwan?
Citizens of most countries, including Taiwan, do not need a visa to travel to Korea for leisure or business purposes. Visitors simply receive a stamp in their passport on arrival to the South Korean point of entry. A visa is also unnecessary for transit through South Korea as long as the time spent at the airport does not exceed 24 hours and the traveler remains within the transit area.
Travelers who are required to obtain a visa due to the nature of their travel must personally submit their application at the South Korean representative office in Taipei. After the introduction of the Korean online visa, this will no longer be necessary as the entire application process will be done online.
Korea Visa Requirements for Taiwanese
It is the responsibility of each applicant to ensure that they meet all the requirements for the Korean ETA for Taiwanese before their trip. Within the new online visa system, travelers will be expected to:
- Have an unexpired Taiwanese passport
- Complete the online application form with accurate information
- Pay for the visa fee online using either a debit or credit card
- Have a valid and functioning email address where they will receive their eVisa
The validity of the electronic visa will be announced by the Immigration Authorities once the new system has been launched.
How to Apply for a South Korea Visa from Taiwan
Korea visa applications for Taiwanese citizens will be done through the application form on the Korea Online Visa website. Applicants for a Korea visa in Taiwan will be asked to:
- Provide their personal details (first name, last name, date, and place of birth, nationality, and contact information)
- Fill in the essential passport details (passport number, issue date, expiry date)
- Indicate the purpose of their trip to Korea
- Answer a number of security questions
Some further requirements may be added to the above list after the eVisa has been launched. In certain situations, it may be necessary to submit further documentation in order to obtain an eTA for South Korea.
The information on the online application will be cross-checked for security purposes. Please note that all information provided by the applicants will be encrypted and secured and will not be available for third parties.
When the applicant has confirmed that all the provided information is correct, he/she will be asked to pay the visa processing fee before submitting the form. The payment will be done through a secure online payment system, using either a debit or credit card.
Application and payment receipts, along with further information regarding the visa, will be sent to the email address that the candidate provided in the form. It is, therefore, necessary to make sure that the email address is correct and functioning before submitting the application.
Given that all the eVisa criteria are met, and the form is completed accurately, the candidate will in most cases receive approval in a matter of days. The visa is to be printed out and presented together with the passport to the authorities at the Korean border.
